Patagonia has more than 50 years’ experience supporting the grassroots environmental movement. Through its trust, nonprofits and grants generated from 1% for the Planet (the company’s self-imposed “Earth Tax”), the company has donated more than $330 million to environmental causes.

This Earth Day, Patagonia will publish a timely primer of collected wisdom and best advice from the field in continued support of the mission-aligned work by global environmental and environmental justice activists. Tools to Save Our Home Planet: A Changemaker’s Guidebook (April 22, 2025, paperback, 97819523381685) will empower activists at all stages with actionable steps, field case studies, and inspiring essays. The book addresses the urgent need for strategic planning, clear goals, and safe collective action in response to significant environmental threats posed by the 2025 administration.

“We can’t wait for government to lead on climate,” says Patagonia CEO Ryan Gellert. “We’re all dependent on the same living planet, and we need to unify people who recognize that change is urgent.”

Tools to Save Our Home Planet features contributions from 56 environmental leaders Patagonia has supported and collaborated with over the years. It also includes chapters by presenters from Patagonia’s biannual Tools Conference, which began in 1994 when the company invited representatives from 75 grassroots nonprofit organizations to gather and learn from each other. This book extends trainings and stories from the conference to a broader audience, supporting the people working tirelessly for solutions to the climate crisis and for environmental injustice.

The book captures the wisdom of renowned activists such as Yvon Chouinard, Ryan Gellert, Annie Leonard, Amy Cordalis, Leah Thomas, Jade Begay, Judith LeBlanc, Bill McKibben, Aaron Hill, Abigail Dillen, Kevin Patel, Jamie Henn, and Elizabeth Yeampierre. Designed to be a resource for organizations looking to hone their core skills, the lessons and examples are as current, diverse, and global as the changemakers themselves. Case studies span the globe and range widely in topic, from successfully undamming the Klamath River, to the 16 Montana youth who fought for their right to a clean and healthy environment, to rewilding Argentina.

“In these pages, you’ll find the best practices and tricks of the trade from those on the front lines, fighting for the planet and for thriving communities,” writes Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard in the foreword. “Learning from and being inspired by those on the front lines is the best way I know to gain momentum in this fight for our lives.”

The book mirrors an activist’s journey, beginning with self-reflection and essays that help readers to identify their purpose and clarify their cause. The focus then shifts to the inner-workings of an organization, including how to create a communications strategy, organize people, and fundraise. Next, the book looks outward, exploring ways to create momentum through mobilization, events, political tools, collaboration, and legal action. The final chapter focuses on building movements, demonstrating how combining purpose, effective organizations, and momentum can create a tidal wave of change. The hope is that Tools to Save Our Home Planet will become dog-eared and scribbled in — a reassuring and resourceful companion to environmental and environmental justice movements.
